William Miller (1782–1849) taught from biblical prophecy that Christ would return about 1843, later focused on 22 October 1844. The day passed without that return, the Great Disappointment. He died in 1849, fourteen years before the Seventh-day Adventist Church organized in 1863. He did not keep the seventh-day Sabbath and was not a Seventh-day Adventist. Adventists claim him as the forerunner of their movement, not as a member.
